Each week, cafés around campus produce approximately 80 kg of coffee ground waste per week, adding to landfill. However, used coffee grounds contain many key minerals that can help improve plant growth. That is why this semester we have started an initiative which uses these coffee grounds in conjunction with other biodegradable ingredients to create a self-grow pot plant kit. Each plant is grown out of a transportable, re-usable jar, which also comes with a positive message attached. And the leaves from the flowers that grow out of the jars can also be made into a tea.
Aged care residents are increasingly experiencing feelings of loneliness and disinterest in activities, often as a result of loss of independence. It was found that more than 50% of aged care residents have symptoms relating to depression and 46% have suicidal thoughts. Thus, flow.art aims to tackle 2 problems: the declining mental health of aged care residents, and the lack of opportunity for fine arts & psychology graduates. In flow.art workshops, student volunteers seeking relevant work experience help facilitate art therapy via fluid art, which utilises the creative state of immersion that helps distract from feelings of loneliness and helplessness.
